Leeds Area Community Safety, part of the Safer Leeds Partnership, runs a number of action programmes across the city to raise public awareness and help reduce crime rates in Leeds.

Much of their work centres on young people and increasingly they are working with the city’s schools as a platform to try and instil common sense values and social responsibility at a young age.

Initially Totality GCS was approached to provide the printing for a document aimed at 50,000 pupils and their parents at High Schools.

The timescale for the production of the booklet was tight, however as part of the re-print process, we took a broader look at the brief and provided an alternative approach for the Police to consider, one which we felt would connect more directly with a young audience.

We produced a pitch that was simple and punchy, using the concept ‘High School Bulletin’ (a play on the hit teen film ‘High School Musical’) along with bold graphics targeted appropriately at young teenagers.

The Police were impressed with our initiative and visual style and as a result, we were tasked with producing the second issue from start to finish.

The result has been an ongoing series of literature using a young, urban graphic design that connects directly with the target audience and provides a more appealing framework for communicating the serious messages contained within the text. Feedback from the schools has been very positive, which had added to the overall credibility of the programme.
